A reachability check calls a public address of your app from the outside, for example https://app.acme.com/health. It tells you when your app cannot be reached at all, even if it sends no errors.

Create a check

1

Open the card

Go to Technical, card Reachability and heartbeats, part Reachability checks.
2

Enter the address

Type the address under Public URL (https).
3

Create it

Click Create check (every 300 s).
Only Owners and Admins can create, pause and remove checks. Every change is in the protocol. Roles that may see code can see the checks. On Free, each app has 1 check, and a check runs at most every 5 minutes. The check also appears under Settings › App › Connections as “Uptime check:” with its address.

States

Use Pause, Enable and Remove on each check.

What counts as success

  • An answer with HTTP status 200 to 399.
  • everydeck reads only the status and the time until the headers arrive. It does not read the content of the answer and stores nothing of it.
  • A check waits at most its timeout, 5 seconds unless set otherwise. A slow address fails after that time and holds up no other checks.
  • everydeck follows no redirects and never calls private networks.

Outage and recovery

  • Two failures in a row count as an outage. A case opens, with an email (row App unreachable in Emails and notifications).
  • One success closes the case (“Reachable again”), with an email (row Back up). This also holds after Pause and Enable.
The case says itself: “with a single probe location a network problem on everydeck’s side cannot be ruled out.” While an account is waiting to be deleted, no checks run.

What it does not check

  • The expiry of your SSL certificate or your domain.
  • Required pages like an imprint or a privacy page.
  • More than one location.
  • The content of the answer.
  • Services that do not speak HTTP.
